Mürren is the quintessential Swiss mountain town. Although lesser known than other towns in the Alps, Mürren should be on your list to visit with your significant other. Situated in the heart of the Swiss Alps, that has spectacular views of the three towering mountains: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
We visited Mürren in summer of 2016 and fell head over heals in love with this charming village. We cannot say enough how incredible the breathtaking views were! This is actually the place where we were inspired to start our travel blog so we can share with everyone spectacular places like this! In our Couples Travel Guide to Mürren, we’ll explore this wonderfully romantic little Swiss town.
Train to Mürren
Train is the only way to get to Mürren. We took the train from Zurich through Interlaken to Mürren (don’t forget to look out the window for amazing scenery almost the entire route). The best part about travelling to Mürren is that you’ll take a modern train, switch to a gondola, and then take a cool mountain train. The entire trip is filled with some of the most spectacular scenery that we’ve seen in our travels.
Stay at the Hotel Alpina
Just look at that view! This picture does not do the views justice at all! If you happen to book a mountain view room, which we highly recommend, you’ll get spectacular views of the mountains and the Lauterbrunnen valley. We booked via Booking.com from the amazing reviews and pictures of others posted. The hotel did not disappoint. We splurged and booked a mountain view room, and upon our arrival, we were greeted with a breathtaking rainbow.
Hotel Alpina is a family run hotel and everyone that we met were extremely friendly and helpful .The rooms are simple, clean, and a little bit rustic to add to the village charm. This is definitely not the Ritz Carlton, but the view will certainly enchant you! We loved just sitting on our balcony looking out at the mountains above and the valley below. The complimentary breakfast is excellent. One day we just missed breakfast by 10-15 minutes because we were coming down from visiting the Schithorn and the hotel owner had packed two breakfast bags for us to take with us on our train ride back into the city. It was incredibly sweet and we certainly appreciate it considering how expensive food costs in Switzerland! We had dinner at the hotel restaurant twice and sat outside on the balcony. It was so romantic just sitting there enjoying the view and eating some Swiss cheese fondue for two!
Cable Car to the Schilthorn and Breakfast at Piz Gloria
We were incredibly lucky to get a morning free of fog and clouds on our last day in Murren. The three days prior were just too foggy and cloudy for us to go to the Schilthorn. Tickets were extremely expensive and you want to make sure you go on a clear day so you can see everything, otherwise, it won’t be worth paying all that money to just go up and see clouds. This is the highest point from Murren to see the Swiss alps.
The view is mind blowing. We’ve never been or seen something so beautiful. Once you and your partner get little bit too chilly, stop by the rotating restaurant and grab some coffee and breakfast and just enjoy the mountain views.
The level below is the Thrill Walk. We highly recommend this! It is included in your ticket so definitely go! If you or your partner are afraid of heights, you might want to skip this 🙂 . Our legs were shaking the entire time. Also, go as early as you can to avoid crowds! This is an experience not to be missed!
Hike to Gimmelwald
Take a romantic hike down to another little mountain, Gimmelwald. The hike takes only 30 minutes so take your take time, breathe in the mountain air, and even lounge around on your way down. The hike was absolutely beautiful in any weather.
Stop by the cool Honesty Shop to buy some cool homemade Swiss souvenirs. Stop by one of the local cheese sheds and try some authentic Swiss Alp kase. When you get tired of wandering around this beautiful little town, hop in a gondola to take you back to Mürren.
Take a Funicular Ride to Allmendhubel
Allmendhubel is a hill overlooking the town Mürren. The views again are absolutely amazing. There’s a playground, cafe, and sitting areas up here. Bring some wine or beer, find a bench, and just enjoy. We just sat up here for a few hours to enjoy the view and immerse ourselves with the local people! Allmendhubel is also a great starting point for the north face trails if you want to hike as well.
Beers at Hotel Alpina
After a long hard day of enjoying gorgeous mountain views, head back to the Hotel Alpina for some more mountain views…this time with some cold Swiss beers. Hotel Alpina has a nice sitting area that overlooks the valley. A perfect way to wind down your day in Mürren!
Mürren is the quintessential Swiss mountain town and of the most beautiful places to visit with your significant other. Mürren is more of a relaxing and nature scene so don’t expect to party once it gets dark. When in Mürren, connect with the locals and just enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. We hope our Couples Travel Guide to Mürren Switzerland inspires you to take the trip with your partner!
